Tired of the same three spooky season movie recs that rotate every year? I gotchu. Here are some of my favorite early 2000s gems perfect for spooky season! Enjoy!
May (2002)
A lonely girl is frankensteining an ideal friend for herself.
Ginger Snaps (2000)
Two outcast teenage sisters navigate one of them turning into a werewolf. Being a woman is indeed a violent experience.
Ghost Ship (2002)
A marine salvage crew finds an abandoned luxury ocean liner drifting freely and slowly sinking, but something is seriously off with the ship...
American Mary (2012)
A broke medical student is sucked into the underground world of extreme body modification.
Rose Red (2002)
A psychology professor gathers a team of psychics to investigate a Seattle mansion known to be haunted. All she wants is to trigger a little “spark” of the supernatural to prove to her department that her lifelong research is worth something. Only the house is hungry and won’t let them go easily.
Blair Witch (1999) and Blair Witch 2: Book of Shadows (2000)
The first one is a cult classic of found footage. The second movie is shot in a traditional third-person POV and is more like a psychological thriller.
The Skeleton Key (2005)
A hospice nurse takes a job at a foreboding Louisiana plantation house to care for a dying old man, and gets sucked into a web of hoodoo, secrets, and more.
Hide and Seek (2005)
A grieving father tries to help his daughter cope with her mother’s death through an imaginary friend who turns out to be entirely too real.
(And if you remember this movie having a completely different ending, you’re right! When it first came out in theaters, it had an alternate conclusion before they swapped it out for the home release.)
And if you are looking for fall-coded books with these specific vibes to add to your TBR:
Into the Dark, We Go
A supernatural Appalachian thriller. The Blair Witch Project meets The Ritual, steeped in small-town secrets, haunted woods, and mysteries that should have remained buried.
Loud as Bones
May-coded, visceral, sapphic vampire horror.
